Scam Alert! “Cash-for-Treatment” Scam at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital!

The Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi located in front of AIIMS, Delhi is the largest hospital owned by the Central Government in India . Recently, the renowned hospital has found itself entangled in a dirty “cash-for-treatment"” scam carried on by one of its senior doctors.

Details of The “Cash-for-Treatment” Scam in Safdarjung Hospital

Senior neurosurgeon, Manish Rawat has been found guilty by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the following charges:

1. Overbilling of poor patients

2. Selling medicines and other medical aid on higher prices than MRP

3. Promising early appointments to poor patients by accepting bribe money

4. Demand of extra money for surgical operations

These serious allegations in the Safdarjung Hospital “cash-for-treatment” scam have taken the Ministry of Health by surprise. Kanishka Surgicals owner, Deepak Khattar and 3 other accomplices, namely, Kuldeep, Avnesh and Manish have also been arrested in relation to the “cash-for-treatment” scam.

Statements Reported

“The accused doctor used to demand money for giving medical advice and conducting surgery, bypassing rules for treatment at the hospital…Searches were conducted at various places, including Delhi and UP, which led to the seizure of incriminating documents and digital devices etc”, said a representative from the CBI present in the Safdarjung Hospital.

The “cash-for-treatment” scam has tainted the image of the Safdarjung Hospital of Delhi. The trust of poor patients has been breached and the actions of the accused doctor are against the very ideals for which the Safdarjung hospital was set up— Cheap and speedy access to healthcare.
