A tragic accident unfolded in Chhattisgarh’s Mungeli district on Thursday when a chimney at a smelting plant in the Saragaon area collapsed, killing one worker and injuring two. Authorities report that two individuals remain missing, while rescue operations are ongoing.

Mungeli Superintendent of Police Bhojram Patel stated that the incident occurred when a silo—a large iron structure used for storing bulk materials—gave way, trapping several workers under the debris. Following the collapse, local authorities launched an immediate rescue mission. Two injured workers were pulled from the rubble and transported to a hospital in Bilaspur for treatment.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the collapse may have been caused by structural failure. While the exact number of trapped workers remains uncertain, rescue teams are using specialized equipment to locate and retrieve those buried under the debris.

The incident has highlighted safety concerns at industrial facilities, with calls for stricter compliance with safety standards to prevent such tragedies. Officials have assured a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse to determine accountability and avoid similar incidents in the future.

This is the latest in a series of industrial accidents that underline the urgent need for stringent oversight of safety protocols in workplaces, particularly in high-risk sectors such as smelting and construction.
