The ongoing monsoon session
of Parliament is likely to witness another stormy day as the opposition parties
in the grand alliance I.N.D.I.A. persist with their demands regarding the
situation in violence-stricken Manipur. The seventh day of the session on
Friday might see proceedings being stalled in both houses due to heated
discussions.
Members of the opposition alliance have been unwavering in their demand to set aside all listed businesses for a discussion on the Manipur situation. They are also pressing for a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the state of affairs in the northeastern state.
Additionally, the opposition members are expected to push for a date to vote on a non-confidence motion filed against the central government. The motion was previously tabled by Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi.
Thursday witnessed intense clashes between the treasury and opposition benches as they debated the motion. In a symbolic protest, most opposition members arrived at the parliament wearing black clothes to express their dissatisfaction over the denial of discussions on Manipur and the postponement of the debate on the no-confidence motion.
Rajya Sabha faced noisy scenes right from the start as opposition members demanded a discussion on Manipur under Rule 287. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar faced constant interruptions during his statement on foreign policy as opposition members continued raising slogans. Treasury members briefly countered with pro-Modi slogans.
The leader of the house in Rajya Sabha, Piyush Goyal, criticized the opposition's symbolic protest, stating that those wearing black clothes couldn't understand the increasing power and prestige of the country.
Amid the chaos, the house
was adjourned multiple times, and eventually, the Rajya Sabha passed the
cinematograph bill in the absence of opposition party members who staged a
walkout in protest over the Manipur violence issue.
In Lok Sabha, the Speaker
took up the question hour, but opposition members persisted with their demands
related to Manipur. The no-confidence motion, moved by opposition members, was
admitted by the Speaker on Wednesday.
