Surahi, Shawl and Painting: PM Modi's Gifts to Foreign Dignitaries During BRICS

On Thursday, while on his visit to Johannesburg, South Africa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted various presents to various foreign dignitaries. 

PM Modi gifts a pair of Surahi with Bidri work from Telangana to the South African President, gives a Nagaland Shawl to the first lady of South Africa, and offers a Gond Painting from Madhya Pradesh to the Brazilian President. The gifts hold some significant meaning. 

PM Narendra Modi gifts a Bidri work pair of 'Surahi' from Telangana to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The Bidri vase is an exclusively Indian innovation inspired by a 500-year-old Persian craft, unique to the town of Bidar.

These Bidri vases are meticulously crafted using an alloy composed of Zinc, Copper, and various non-ferrous metals. Intricate designs are engraved onto the surface and adorned with pure Silver wire inlay. Subsequently, the casting is immersed in a solution mixed with the special soil from Bidar Fort, renowned for its unique oxidizing properties. This transformation results in the Zinc alloy acquiring a lustrous black finish, while the silver inlay remains brilliantly contrasting against the dark background.

PM Modi gifts a Nagaland shawl to South African First Lady, Dr. Tshepo Motsepe. Naga shawls represent a splendid expression of textile art, with a history spanning centuries among the tribes of Nagaland. Renowned for their vivid hues, intricate patterns, and the application of age-old weaving methods preserved through successive generations, these shawls are a true testament to the rich cultural heritage of Nagaland.

These distinctive artworks are composed of dots and lines and have a long history, adorning the walls and floors of Gond communities. They are created using locally sourced natural materials such as charcoal, colored soil, plant sap, leaves, cow dung, limestone powder, and more, reflecting the culture's intricate connection with its environment.
