Surat Court Finds Rahul Gandhi Guilty of Defamation in The ‘Modi surname’ Case
Surat Court Finds Rahul Gandhi:-
In the ‘Modi surname’ Case, a Surat Court has found Rahul Gandhi guilty of criminal defamation and sentenced him to 2 years of imprisonment.
What Happened?
The Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad was sued by BJP MLA and former Gujarat Minister Purnesh Modi Over his defamatory remarks under Sections 499(defamation) and 500(punishment of defamation) of the Indian Penal Code. While addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka, prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, RaGa commented, "Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi... how come they all have Modi as a common surname?" Why do all thieves share the surname Modi?”
During the hearing, the Gandhi scion refused to accept the charges against him, stating "I don't have any idea, I don't have any idea, I don't have the foggiest idea". In 2021, Rahul paid a visit to the court to record his statement. Though he was awarded 2 years in jail, he has also been granted bail as well as his sentence has been suspended for 30 days to allow him to appeal against the decision.
Reactions to The Court Order
The verdict was welcomed by BJP who had been waiting for Congress’s apologies over their leader’s remarks. While BJP leader Amit Malviya seemed satisfied with the court’s verdict, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said whenever Rahul Gandhi says something, he invites embarrassment to the nation and his party.
On the other hand, senior Congress leader and MLA, Arjun Modhwadia, remarked "Truth is put to test and is harassed, but truth alone prevails. Several false cases have been filed against Gandhi, but he will emerge from all these. We will get justice".
In a rare display of support, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, "A conspiracy is being hatched to eliminate non-BJP leaders and parties by prosecuting them. We have differences with the Congress, but it is not right to implicate Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case like this. It is the job of the Public and the opposition to ask questions. We respect the court but disagree with the decision".
