Taiwan was struck on Wednesday by the worst earthquake to strike the island in at least 25 years, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. After the earthquake shook buildings off their foundations, islands in southern Japan and the Philippines were alerted to the possibility of a tsunami.

There was a very little population in the eastern county of Hualien, close to the epicenter of the earthquake. Taiwanese television networks broadcast footage taken from dangerous angles of buildings.

There were no early reports of casualties, even though the local media had reported that some people were stranded.

As per the Central Weather Administration of Taiwan, the earthquake occurred at approximately 7:58 a.m. (2358 GMT) at a depth of 15.5 kilometers (9.6 miles) off the eastern coast of the country. The capital city of Taipei had power outages in a few areas as a result.

Parts of Okinawa's southern prefecture have been affected by many small tsunami waves, the Japan Meteorological Agency reports. The previous tsunami alert was then downgraded to an advisory. As a result, the magnitude was changed to 7.7.

The Philippines Seismology Agency also advised those living in coastal provinces to seek higher ground in the case of an earthquake.

Shanghai was one of the locations where the earthquake was felt, a witness told Reuters. Official Chinese media said that other cities in the Chinese province of Fujian, including Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Ningde, were also impacted.

People in Taipei were still experiencing the aftershocks, a witness told Reuters. As of right now, the central meteorological office in Taiwan has registered at least 25 aftershocks.
