A political dispute erupted in Tamil Nadu after BJP leader K Annamalai criticized the DMK government for replacing the Rupee symbol with a Tamil letter in the state budget logo. The controversy coincides with CM MK Stalin’s opposition to the National Education Policy, accusing the Centre of enforcing Hindi and withholding funds.

The political climate in Tamil Nadu has heated up after BJP's Tamil Nadu chief, K Annamalai, slammed the DMK government for replacing the Indian Rupee symbol 'Rs' with the Tamil letter 'Ru' in the state budget logo for 2025-26. Calling the move “stupid,” Annamalai criticized Chief Minister MK Stalin and pointed out that the original Rupee symbol was designed by a Tamilian, Udhay Kumar, whose father was a former DMK MLA.
The controversy comes amidst an ongoing clash between the DMK and the BJP-led central government over the National Education Policy (NEP) and the three-language formula. MK Stalin has been vocal in opposing the NEP, labeling it as an attempt to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu. During a public meeting in Tiruvallur, he accused the central government of using financial coercion to force the state to comply with the policy. He alleged that funds meant for Tamil Nadu’s education sector were being withheld because the state refused to adopt NEP.
Stalin further stated that the policy does not aim to improve India’s education system but is instead designed to promote Hindi, which he sees as a threat to Tamil Nadu's linguistic identity. He reaffirmed his government's stance against the imposition of Hindi and vowed to resist any attempt to undermine Tamil culture.
