A devastating car crash in Central Texas has claimed the lives of five people, including three members of an Indian-origin family from Leander, leaving behind a 14-year-old boy as the sole immediate survivor. The tragedy occurred on August 14, 2024, approximately six miles north of US 281 in Lampasas County.
The victims from the Indian-origin family have been identified as Arvind Mani (45), his wife Pradeepa Arvind (40), and their 17-year-old daughter Andril Arvind. Their 14-year-old son, Adiryan, was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident as he had just started 9th grade that day.
The family was en route to The University of Texas at Dallas, where Andril had recently been admitted to study Computer Science after graduating from Rouse High School. The principal of Rouse High School expressed deep sorrow over the loss in a letter to the school community.
The crash occurred when a 2004 Cadillac CTS, driven by Jacinto Gudino Duran (31) with passenger Yosilu Gasman Martinez (23), both from Copperas Cove, experienced a tire blowout. The Cadillac veered into oncoming traffic and collided with the Arvind family's 2024 Kia Telluride. Both Duran and Martinez also lost their lives in the accident.
A Department of Public Safety trooper described the collision as "one of the worst crashes" he had seen in 26 years, citing the extensive damage and loss of life. Witnesses reported that the Cadillac may have been traveling at speeds up to 100 mph before the crash.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support Adiryan, the surviving son, with funeral, legal, and ongoing care expenses, including educational costs. The community has rallied to support the young boy as he faces an unimaginably difficult road ahead.
