The Legend of Ravana:-
Ravana, who went on to become the King of Lanka was born half-demon and half-Brahmin. His maternal grandfather was the king of all demons while his father was a Brahmin. The King of Lanka took after both of their personalities to become the ultimate epitome of goodness and evil. Ravana’s personal life, beliefs, and devotion to Lord Shiva have a lot to do with the way he achieved the kingdom of Golden Lanka and ascended the throne of the King of Lanka. The Legend of Ravana The Legend of Ravana-The Legend of Ravana Ravana: The Greatest Scholar That Ever Was! Even before becoming the King of Lanka, Ravana is believed to be the greatest scholar that ever walked the Earth in Indian Hindu mythology. Ravana was labeled ‘Dashanan’ (one who has 10 heads). This is because he had full-fledged knowledge of 4 Vedas and 6 Upanishads. Apart from the Hindu scriptures, the King of Lanka was also proficient in classical music. His art of playing the Veena was celebrated worldwide. Ravana’s Devotion to Lord Shiva Throughout his life, the King of Lanka performed a lot of gestures to prove his devotion to Lord Shiva. Starting with building a majestic temple of Lord Shiva inside his palace, he went on to impress Lord Shiva by cutting each of his heads and submitting them to Lord Shiva. Every time he cut a head, another head would appear. Despite having great knowledge of Dharma and Adharma, an arrogant and proud King of Lanka arrived at the mountains of Kailasa, the abode of Shiva, to carry the whole mountain to Lanka in order to please his mother. When Shiva was angry at this action of Ravana, the King of Lanka instantly cut off one of his arms, stripped out the ligaments, made a Veena, and played an unworldly melody to win the heart of his idol God. How Did Ravana Finally Become the King of Lanka? Before becoming the King of Lanka, Ravana was deeply indulged in gaining knowledge, music, and devotion to Shiva. Lord Shiva’s wife, Parvati pleaded to her husband that she was tired of living an ascetic life and wanted to live a normal Grahastha life. Although Shiva did not want to leave his ascetic life, in order to fulfill the wish of his beloved, he ordered Ravana to look after the project of building a golden palace where Shiva would reside along with Parvati. Ravana chose Sri Lanka as the venue for the golden palace and contacted his brother Kuber for gold and riches. Further, he engaged Vishwakarma, the engineer God, to build the golden palace. After the palace was built, Ravana was hypnotized by its beauty and looked at it with greedy eyes. During Lord Shiva’s grihapravesh (ceremony to celebrate entry into a new residence), Ravana played the role of the pandit who carried out the rituals of the ceremony. When Lord Shiva asked him for his fees, a greedy Ravana grabbed the opportunity to demand the golden throne of the King of Lanka. Lord Shiva had never wanted to sacrifice his ascetic life. He acceded to his demand and this is how Ravana became the King of Lanka. The Legend of Ravana The Legend of Ravana-The Legend of Ravana The Curse of Destruction on Lanka Even though Ravana attained the throne of the King of Lanka, Lord Shiva’s devotee, Nandi cursed Ravana that he would lose his Golden Lanka because of a monkey and this curse turned out to be true. It is Hanuman who had set the Golden Lanka on fire after being insulted at Ravana’s royal court. Hence, Ravana, the King of Lanka ended up losing the coveted throne.
