Captain Oleksiy "Moonfish" Mes, an elite Ukrainian pilot, died when his F-16 crashed during a major Russian aerial attack. The incident occurred shortly after Ukraine received these advanced jets from Western allies. Ukrainian officials rule out pilot error and seek international help to investigate the crash's cause.
One of Ukraine’s most prominent fighter pilots, Captain Oleksiy Mes with the call sign “Moonfish” died when his US-supplied F-16 fighter jet crashed during what Kyiv described as the largest Russian air campaign. The event happened several weeks after Ukraine received its much-anticipated F-16 aircraft, which has now become a major blow to their use.
Ukrainian Defense Forces have dismissed the possibility of pilot’s mistake stressing that the crash was rather a mysterious incident. The absence of Moonfish is especially painful for Ukraine because he was among the few pilots who were trained on the F-16s. His burial on Thursday was a sad reminder of the cost of the war that is still raging in Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had only recently acknowledged the F-16s’ first combat use, describing their ability to counter Russian missiles and drones. These new more advanced fighters were the result of a major diplomatic push by Zelensky’s administration that had been trying to get its Western partners to provide Ukraine with modern fighter jets since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

The process of procuring F-16 was not easy. This reluctance from the western countries later opened up to the Netherlands and Denmark in early summer of 2023 and then the United States. Zelensky added that the acquisition of the jets was not easy as it took hundreds of meetings and negotiations.
When the crash investigations start, Ukrainian officials are keen to get foreign help in establishing the cause of the crash. The case exemplifies the challenges and dangers involved in introducing hi-tech equipment of the US and NATO in the Ukrainian military framework.
The F-16s are a major improvement for Ukraine in terms of air combat capabilities and they are multirole providing air support, ground attack and missile defense. Their deployment was considered as a game changer in preventing Russia from flying in the area.
It also makes one wonder about the future of F-16 operations in the ongoing conflict and the problematics of modernising Ukraine’s air force in an active war theatre.
