A stampede at the New Delhi railway station killed 18 people after confusion between 'Prayagraj Express' and 'Prayagraj Special' led passengers to rush between platforms. Overcrowding and miscommunication worsened the situation. Authorities have launched an investigation and are reviewing safety measures to prevent future incidents.

At least 18 people lost their lives in a tragic stampede at the New Delhi railway station on Saturday, with an initial probe revealing that confusion over train names played a key role in the chaos.
According to Delhi Police sources, passengers mistook the arrival announcement of the 'Prayagraj Special' at Platform 16 for the 'Prayagraj Express' stationed at Platform 14. Fearing they might miss their train, many rushed toward Platform 16, triggering a stampede.
Adding to the confusion, four trains bound for Prayagraj were scheduled on the same day, three of which were delayed. The overcrowding, coupled with miscommunication, escalated into panic. A witness reported that passengers were unclear about platform changes, leading to the tragic incident.
The Indian Railways has announced that the 'Prayagraj Special' will continue to depart from Platform 16. Meanwhile, authorities have deployed additional personnel to manage crowds and prevent further chaos.
To investigate the incident, the Railways has formed a two-member committee consisting of Narsingh Deo, Principal Chief Commercial Manager, and Pankaj Gangwar, Principal Chief Safety Commissioner. The committee has launched a high-level inquiry and is reviewing CCTV footage to determine accountability.
