Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned of a “forceful but reasonable” response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25% tariff threat. Trump remains firm on imposing tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, raising concerns over economic disruption. Canada has vowed to retaliate, keeping all options open.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed a “forceful but reasonable” response if U.S. President Donald Trump proceeds with imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. The tariffs, set to take effect on Saturday, have raised concerns over economic disruption between the two trading partners.
Trudeau stated that his government is working to prevent the tariffs but is prepared to retaliate immediately if necessary. “No one wants to see American tariffs on Canadian goods. We are ready with a strong response if they move ahead,” Trudeau posted on X.
Trump, reaffirming his stance, announced that Canada, Mexico, and China would face new trade duties, with Canadian oil potentially subject to a 10% tariff instead of 25%. However, he hinted at broader energy tariffs by mid-February, causing oil prices to rise.
Trudeau warned that the tariffs would not only harm Canada's economy but also negatively impact the U.S. and undermine the economic and security partnership between the two nations. He emphasised Canada’s vital contributions to U.S. industries, including steel, aluminium, minerals, and clean energy.
Despite potential economic fallout, Trump indicated that no delay would be granted for Canada, Mexico, or China, stating, “Nothing can be done to forestall them.” Economists warn that such tariffs and expected retaliatory measures could disrupt global trade.

As tensions rise, Canada has promised to fight until the tariffs are lifted, keeping “everything on the table” in its response. The outcome of this trade dispute could significantly impact North American economic relations in the coming months.
