President Trump has enforced 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, affecting key trade partners like Canada and Mexico. The move has escalated tensions, with retaliatory measures taken by Ontario. While critics warn of economic fallout, the White House insists the tariffs will benefit the US.

The United States has officially imposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, fulfilling President Donald Trump’s promise of “no exceptions.” The move, announced Wednesday, is expected to increase production costs in key industries such as automobiles, home appliances, and beverage packaging, likely leading to higher consumer prices.
Since returning to office, Trump has reinforced tariffs on major US trade partners, including Canada, Mexico, and China. While some reductions were initially granted to neighboring nations, he has pledged additional levies to take effect on April 2. The new tariffs particularly impact Canada, which supplies 50% of the US aluminum imports and 20% of its steel. Brazil and Mexico are also significant steel exporters to the US, while aluminum comes from suppliers like the UAE and South Korea.
Trade relations between the US and Canada have grown tense, with Trump threatening to double the tariff rate on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%. In response, Ontario imposed an electricity surcharge on three American states. The tit-for-tat measures raised concerns over potential economic consequences, but after negotiations, Ontario suspended the surcharge.

These tariffs add to previously imposed duties, potentially increasing rates on certain imports unless they comply with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). While critics warn of rising costs and possible economic downturns, Trump dismissed concerns, insisting that the economy remains strong. Despite financial market fluctuations, the White House maintains that the tariffs are a strategic move to strengthen American industry.
