Donald Trump temporarily halted a nationwide TikTok ban, granting a 75-day extension for its parent company ByteDance to address US national security concerns. While the app is operational again, it remains unavailable for new downloads. TikTok’s future hinges on resolving legal and geopolitical challenges.

In a significant move, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order granting TikTok a 75-day extension to resolve national security concerns tied to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance Ltd. The order temporarily halts a nationwide ban that took effect on Sunday.

TikTok, with 170 million users in the US, faced removal from app stores and potential fines under a law passed by Congress last year. The legislation requires ByteDance to divest its US operations due to fears the app could be used by Beijing for surveillance and propaganda.

The platform experienced a 12-hour outage over the weekend but resumed services after Trump’s intervention. However, TikTok remains unavailable for new downloads on Google and Apple app stores.

Trump, who has gained nearly 15 million TikTok followers since joining last year, credited the app for helping him connect with younger voters. "I guess I have a warm spot for TikTok," he remarked at the White House.

Concerns over TikTok’s ties to China predate Trump’s presidency. In 2020, his administration attempted to block the app through executive orders, but courts intervened. The new law, which became enforceable on Sunday, imposes steep penalties on app stores and internet hosting services if they distribute TikTok without ByteDance’s compliance.
