One passenger was killed, and several injured when a Singapore Airlines flight from London encountered severe turbulence, forcing it to divert to Bangkok. The airline expressed condolences and is cooperating with authorities.
One passenger has died and others were injured in a Singapore Airlines Flight 368 turbulence on its way to Singapore from London. The Boeing 777-300ER, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew, was diverted to Bangkok after the incident and landed safely at 15:45 am on Tuesday GMT.
Singapore Airlines said in a statement that the passenger who died was a Swiss citizen and that it is cooperating with Thai authorities offering medical assistance to the injured passengers and dispatching a team to Bangkok.
Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat expressed his concern regarding the situation and promised help from the Singaporean government to those who were affected by the incident: “I am deeply saddened to learn about the incident onboard Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London Heathrow to Singapore”.
Indeed, injuries from turbulence are not a common occurrence especially when one considers the millions of flights per year but John Strickland said that severe turbulence can be dramatic and lead to severe injuries or sadly in this case a fatality.
Strickland said that the flight crews have the resources to predict the turbulence and are trained for the response but still, some regions are more prone to turbulence. He emphasized the need to buckle up for the duration of the flight.
Emergency teams were sent to Suvarnabhumi airport to meet the plane when it was diverted. A probe into the cause of the accident is running while SIA has been working with the police to assist them with the investigation.
