Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant sparked criticism by calling Shaina NC an “imported maal” amid Maharashtra election campaigning. Shaina condemned his comment as disrespectful to women, asserting that voters would reject such attitudes, while Sawant later clarified his remark referred to her outsider status in Mumbadevi.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant stirred controversy by referring to Shaina NC, a BJP leader contesting Maharashtra's Mumbadevi seat under CM Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, as “imported maal.” Sawant criticized Shaina, highlighting her long association with the BJP before joining Shinde's faction for the upcoming state elections. His comment has been widely criticized as derogatory and dismissive.
Sawant claimed that his remark, made to underscore Shaina’s outsider status in Mumbadevi, was misinterpreted, explaining that local support in the constituency favors “original” candidates over “imported” ones. Despite this clarification, his statement sparked backlash, with Shaina NC calling it a reflection of Sawant’s disrespectful attitude towards women in politics. She suggested that voters in Mumbadevi would reject such disparaging views and urged Sawant to apologize at Nagpada police station.
Shaina NC, a prominent BJP leader who recently shifted to Shinde’s camp, is contesting against Amin Patel, the sitting Congress MLA from Mumbadevi, who represents the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition. The remark adds tension to an already competitive election environment, with the Maharashtra polls set for November 20.

As gendered language and respect for women in politics remain prominent issues, Shaina’s response underlines her resolve to confront and reject attempts to demean female leaders. Sawant’s comment has intensified the discourse on political decorum, with both factions striving to win the hearts of Maharashtra’s voters.
