Ukraine targeted Russia’s Engels airbase with a drone strike, causing a massive explosion and fire. The attack hit a key facility housing nuclear-capable bombers. Russia claimed to have intercepted 132 drones but confirmed an airfield fire. Ukraine also attacked an oil refinery in Syzran, escalating the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine launched a major drone strike on Russia’s Engels strategic bomber base, triggering a massive explosion and fire nearly 700 km from the front lines of the ongoing war. The attack, verified by Reuters, caused significant damage to the airfield, which houses Russia’s Tu-160 nuclear-capable bombers.
Videos circulating on Russian Telegram channels showed a large fireball and plumes of smoke rising from the site. Russian authorities, including Saratov Governor Roman Busargin, confirmed that an airfield in Engels was on fire following a Ukrainian drone attack. While he did not explicitly name the Engels base, it remains the primary military facility in the region.
Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed to have shot down 132 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions. However, reports suggest that some drones successfully breached defenses, causing destruction near the strategic airbase. Engels district head Maxim Leonov declared a local state of emergency, although officials provided limited details about the extent of the damage.
This is not Ukraine’s first attack on the Engels airbase. Since December 2022, Ukraine has targeted the site multiple times, including a previous strike on an oil depot supplying the airfield, which led to a fire lasting five days. Ukrainian security sources indicated that the latest attack may have hit storage facilities holding guided bombs and missiles.

Meanwhile, Ukraine also launched a drone attack on an oil refinery in Russia’s Syzran city in the Samara region. Local authorities confirmed emergency services were deployed, but no casualties were reported. The extent of the refinery’s damage remains unclear.
As tensions escalate, both sides continue to engage in aerial and drone warfare, with Ukraine intensifying its strategic attacks deep inside Russian territory.
