President Mohamed Bazoum was elected as the President in the year 2021, marking Niger's first-ever democratic transition of power. However, the political scenario in Niger has taken a tumultuous turn in the past month as President Bazoum was removed from office in a coup.

This military intervention, which met with widespread international criticism, led to Abdourahamane Tiani, the commander of Niger's presidential guard, declaring himself as the new leader of the nation. Ever since then President Bazoum and his family have been forced to live in distressing conditions.
