Amidst the harsh living conditions that Niger President
Mohamed Bazoum and his family are facing following their ousting by a military
coup, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his
"concern" regarding their well-being.
The reports revealing the current condition of President
Bazoum of Niger and his family, sent a shockwave to the entire world as it
clearly showed a lack of access to even basic amenities such as electricity,
water, food, and medical supplies.
The spokesperson's statement, released on Wednesday, reads, "The Secretary-General is very concerned over the deplorable living conditions that President Bazoum and his family are reported to be living under as they continue to be arbitrarily detained by members of the Presidential Guard in Niger."
Furthermore, the statement indicated the Secretary-General’s
concern over the health and safety of the President and his family. It also
called for the immediate as well as unconditional release of the President and
his family and his reinstatement as the Head of State.
Additionally, the Secretary-General has also expressed deep
concern regarding the reports of the detention of various members of the Niger
government. The UN spokesperson stated, "The Secretary-General is also
alarmed over continuing reports about the arrest of several members of the
Government."
He further added, “He urgently calls for their unconditional
release and for the strict adherence to Niger’s international human rights
obligations."
President Mohamed Bazoum was elected as the President in the
year 2021, marking Niger's first-ever democratic transition of power. However,
the political scenario in Niger has taken a tumultuous turn in the past month
as President Bazoum was removed from office in a coup.
This military intervention, which met with widespread
international criticism, led to Abdourahamane Tiani, the commander of Niger's
presidential guard, declaring himself as the new leader of the nation. Ever
since then President Bazoum and his family have been forced to live in
distressing conditions.
