In a significant move under President Donald Trump’s renewed immigration policy, the US has deported a group of illegal Indian migrants using a C-17 military aircraft. This marks the first such deportation flight to India since Trump’s return to the White House.

According to US officials, the flight departed on Monday and is expected to arrive in India within 24 hours. The Trump administration has intensified its stance on illegal immigration, deploying military resources to assist in border security and deportations. Previously, similar flights transported migrants to countries such as Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras, but India is the farthest destination yet.

Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have repeatedly raised concerns about illegal Indian immigration. During recent discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, the US administration emphasized the need for stricter measures to curb irregular migration.

Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s position against illegal immigration, stating that New Delhi remains open to taking back verified Indian citizens. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the deportations as part of an ongoing consular dialogue with the US, aimed at regulating immigration processes.

Reports indicate that over 1,100 illegal Indian migrants were deported from the US between October 2023 and September 2024. The Department of Homeland Security has noted a steady increase in such deportations, reflecting stricter enforcement measures.

With Trump prioritizing immigration control, further deportations of undocumented Indian migrants are expected. Both governments continue discussions on legal migration pathways and visa regulations to ensure smoother mobility between the two nations.
