A devastating earthquake of 6.8 magnitude struck Morocco on Saturday claiming 630 lives and injuring 320 more.


The earthquake’s dreadful shocks have wreaked havoc in buildings as well as forced the scared inhabitants to escape their houses onto the roads for protection from the calamity.


Residents informed Al Jazeera that in the ancient city of Marrakesh, which is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site, a few establishments came tumbling down due to the earthquake.


As per Al Jazeera's report, the regional news channels have been displaying pictures ‘of a fallen mosque minaret with rubble lying on smashed cars’.


According to the United States Geological Survey(USGS), a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred 56 kilometres west of Oukaïmedene, Morocco on Friday night leaving the residents in shock.

It occurred at 03:41:01 UTC+05:30, at a depth of 18.5 kilometres.


The earthquake resulted in enormous seismic waves travelling through Morocco, from Rabat in the north to Sidi Ifni in the south.


It was felt in many parts of Morocco and caused a lot of damage to buildings and infrastructure.


The earthquake was centred 72 kilometres west of Marrakesh, which is a major economic centre in Morocco.


The USGS found that the epicentre was at Latitude: 31.110°N and Longitude: 8.440°W.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X, previously known as Twitter, to express his sorrow, stating “Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an earthquake in


Morocco. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco.”


He further added, “Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time.”
