77th Independence Day: President Murmu Approved 77 Gallantry Awards

On the eve of
Independence Day 2023, President Droupadi Murmu gave her approval for 76
Gallantry awards to members of the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces
on the occasion. Among these awards are four posthumous Kirti Chakra awards,
eleven Shaurya Chakra awards (including five posthumous), two Bar to Sena
Medals (Gallantry), 52 Sena Medals (Gallantry), three Nao Sena Medals
(Gallantry), and four Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).
The President has
also given approval for 30
Mention-in-Despatches to the Army, which also includes recognition for
Army dog Madhu (posthumously), as well as one commendation for an Air Force
member. These acknowledgements are in honor of their noteworthy roles in
various military operations, such as Operation Rakshak, Operation Snow Leopard,
Operation Casualty Evacuation, Operation Mount Chomo, Operation Orchid,
Operation Kalisham Valley, Rescue Operation, and Operation Evacuation. This
also encompasses Pangsau Pass and Operation Meghdoot.
All the four
Kirtu Chakra recipients, would be receiving the same posthumously, Late Shri
Dilip Kumar Das, Insp/GD, Late Shri Raj Kumar Yadava, HC/GD, Late Shri Bablu
Rabha, Constable/GD, Late Shri Sambhu Roy, Constant C/GD. The awardees were all
CRPF officers and martyred while bravely fighting Naxalites in Chhattisgarh in
different regions.
Eleven Shaurya
Chakras were also approved in which five were posthumous. The recipients
include Major Vijay Verma of the Rajputana Regiment, 44th Battalion, Major Vikas
Bhambhu and Major Mustafa Bohara of Army Aviation Squadron (Posthumous); Major
Sachin Negi, the Grenadiers, Major Rajendra Prasad Jat, the Dogra Regiment and
Major Ravinder Singh Rawat, the Armoured Corps of Rashtriya Rifles; Hav Vivek
Singh Tomar (Posthumous) and Naik Bhim Singh of the Rajputana Rifles; Rifleman
Kulbhushan Manta, the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles of the Rashtriya Rifles
(Posthumous), Saifullah Qadri, SG constable, Jammu and Kashmir police and Shri
Gamit Mukesh Kumar, Constable 61 CRPF.
Indian Army
Majors Vikas Bhambhu and Mustafa Bohara have been posthumously honored with the
Shaurya Chakra for their courageous act in October 2022. They managed to steer
their crashing ALH Dhruv Rudra helicopter away from a populated area and an
ammunition depot in Arunachal Pradesh, preventing potential loss of life.
Despite having the option to land in an open space, the pilots sacrificed their
lives to avert potential harm to the ammunition depot and civilians on the
ground.
Havildar Vivek
Singh Tomar was posthumously granted the Shaurya Chakra for his actions in
January of this year. While stationed at the Siachen Glacier at an elevation of
18,300 feet, he detected a fire within a snow tent. Despite the risk to his own
safety, he courageously entered the tent to control the situation and protect
his fellow soldiers. Tragically, he lost his life in the process due to the
injuries sustained during the incident.
Wing Commander
Shrey Tomar has been honored with the Vayu Sena Medal for Gallantry after
skillfully executing an emergency landing of his twin-engine fighter aircraft
using only one engine. He managed to land the aircraft safely despite a fire,
effectively preventing any loss of life or property.
