Australia Allows MDMA:-
On 8th February 2023, Australia became the first country in the world to allow the legal use of MDMA in the country for medical purposes. What is MDMA? How can a drug be used for medical purposes? About MDMA The drug MDMA is also called ‘ecstasy’ in colloquial language. MDMA is a psychedelic compound which is found predominantly in mushrooms. Psychedelics are those compounds which are capable of influencing the mind and psyche of a person. MDMA is known to catalyze the secretion of dopamine in the body which is also known as the happiness hormone. Thus, it leads to increased levels of happiness. Thus, MDMA will be used for medical purposes for those patients who have life- threatening psychiatric disorders. Psilocybin is another drug which will ideally be administered along with MDMA to treat mental health disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Psychiatrics are the only professionals who have been authorized to write the prescriptions for medical purposes under this new upcoming policy. ‘Australia Allows MDMA’: Reasoning Behind The Decision The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration held the opinion that there was a dire need to introduce new treatment techniques in Australia. The fact that any mental illnesses are treatment- resistant and there are not many viable options available to treat such problems was also considered which led to Australia allowing MDMA to be used for medical purposes. The step has indeed opened doors for more research, however, wise implementation on ground is a factor that the Australian government must consider.
