35 Crude Bombs Recovered

A total of 35 crude bombs were recovered from a pond and a nearby field in the Beldanaga area of Murshidabad district amid the fresh polling at nearly 700 booths for panchayat elections in West Bengal.

Video footage captured the tense operation as a member of the bomb disposal squad cautiously defused and collected the bombs, carefully placing them in a secure bag. With 175 booths, Murshidabad topped the list of violence-hit districts, followed by Malda with 109 booths, as reported by PTI.

Allegations of ballot box tampering and the wave of violence, which claimed the lives of 15 people, prompted the SEC to order new voting at 696 booths. Troubling visuals from various districts showed a police vehicle set ablaze, a miscreant fleeing with a ballot box, and even instances of ballot boxes being set on fire.

Murshidabad witnessed further unrest when miscreants set fire to a police vehicle after the completion of voting. In Malda's Mahadipur area, a miscreant was caught absconding with a ballot box, while in Dinhata, angry voters allegedly set a ballot box ablaze due to grievances over bogus voting. In response to these incidents, polling was suspended at the Indreshwar Primary School in Dinhata after water was thrown into a ballot box.

Repolling ordered in multiple districts. Security measures heightened.

Meanwhile, in Malda's Raniganj panchayat, locals obstructed the repolling process at the Dogachi booth in Gazole block. This obstruction also occurred on Saturday when locals boycotted the vote, demanding immediate repairs to a road. As a result, the ordered repolling could not be conducted because the disgruntled residents locked the booth.

As West Bengal's panchayat elections continue, efforts to maintain peace and security remain a priority, underscoring the importance of upholding democratic principles throughout the electoral process.
