Bengaluru Airport Terminal 2’s “Tiger Wings” is a 4,000-square-foot hydroponic wall with 15,000 native plants, designed by botanist Patrick Blane. The installation promotes local biodiversity, sustainability, and air quality, symbolizing India’s heritage. Expected to bloom into a tiger shape, it marks Blane’s largest Indian project.
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport Terminal 2 introduced a striking 4,000-square-foot hydroponic "Tiger Wings" green wall on Thursday, a living installation featuring over 15,000 plants across 153 native species. Designed by renowned botanist Patrick Blane, the 30-foot high and 160-foot wide wall uses plants sourced from local Bengaluru nurseries and the Western Ghats. Blane aimed to create an ecological display that showcases India’s biodiversity.
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) chairman Sharat Marar praised the installation, revealing that in three months, the wall’s blooming plants are expected to form a tiger shape, symbolizing India’s rich natural heritage. Blane’s approach, using native Indian plants, counters the common use of non-native species in green walls. He noted that India’s local flora is often overlooked in vertical gardens, despite their ability to thrive with limited water and nutrients.
Blane employed felt layers to construct the soilless hydroponic wall, which sustains plant life without additional maintenance. He compared the setup to natural cliff faces where plants flourish with minimal resources, making it a sustainable and self-sustaining ecosystem. This design is intended to boost air quality, improve cooling, and provide an attractive visual feature for travelers. Blane, who has worked on similar projects at Singapore’s Changi Airport, noted that Bengaluru’s green wall is his largest installation in India to date.
