Under the Centre’s programme of National Air Quality Monitoring, the city of Chandigarh is planning to take up expedient steps to conduct research and development on city planning to reduce pollution levels.

Recent Steps Taken

A “study on source apportionment, emission inventory, and carrying capacity related to pollution levels” is to be conducted by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC). For this, the body has invited bids. As of now, the study has been planned to be conducted over a period of 18 months from now. The study will identify “pollutants in different areas of the city, including background, residential, commercial/mixed areas, and specific pollution hot spots”.

The Goal

The goal for Chandigarh city is to reach carbon neutrality by 2030. For this, “City Beautiful” has also planned to conduct a study at a more practical level to analyze the on-ground actions that can be taken to mitigate pollution levels and carbon emissions.

Need for Pollution Control in The Union Territory of Chandigarh

Chandigarh has repeatedly crossed the permissible limits of particulate matter concentration and carbon emissions over the past decade. Moreover, the number of vehicles in the UT is abnormally high making matters worse. As such, it is imperative that Chandigarh must take speedy measures to curb the menace of pollution.
