A traffic police officer in Delhi has been suspended by the Delhi Police on allegations of imposing a fine on a Korean national without providing an official receipt for the penalty.
The incident, which reportedly occurred last month, came to public attention when a Twitter user shared a link to a vlog where the Korean citizen documented the encounter. The vlog was subsequently uploaded on YouTube, bringing the officer's actions into focus.
As per the video evidence, the policeman, identified as Mahesh Chand, halted the Korean man, accusing him of violating traffic rules by driving on the wrong carriageway. He insisted on a fine of Rs 5,000 for the alleged offence.
In the video, the Korean man mistakenly handed over Rs 500, prompting the officer to demand additional money. Consequently, the man gave all his cash as he lacked the required Rs 5,000. Surprisingly, the officer returned Rs 500 and let the man go without issuing an e-challan or any form of fine receipt.
Delhi Police took immediate action and suspended Officer Mahesh Chand while initiating further inquiry. Through a tweet, the police reiterated their commitment to a zero tolerance policy towards corruption and confirmed the ongoing investigation into the officer's conduct.
In his defence, the suspended officer stated that he had intended to provide a receipt but the foreign national had left before he could generate one.
This incident has ignited discussions about transparency and accountability within the Delhi Police force, emphasising the significance of adhering to proper procedures when enforcing traffic regulations. Authorities are now expected to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the truth surrounding the case and take appropriate measures accordingly.
