The second batch of Indian deportees from the United States has alleged harsh treatment during their return, claiming they were handcuffed and shackled throughout the journey. The US military aircraft, carrying 117 illegal Indian immigrants, landed at Amritsar airport late on Saturday night as part of an ongoing deportation drive.

Several deportees expressed distress over their treatment, stating that they were unaware of their imminent deportation until shortly before departure. Daljit Singh, one of the returnees, described being restrained with chains on both hands and legs. Another deportee, Sourav from Punjab’s Ferozepur district, echoed similar accounts, adding that they were initially told they would be shifted to another camp before being boarded onto the aircraft.

Harjit Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur, recounted being detained for 18 days before being deported. “We were caught while crossing the US border and kept in a detention centre. On February 13, we were deported in shackles,” he said.

The return of these deportees has sparked political debates in India, with the opposition demanding a diplomatic response. Congress leader P Chidambaram called the incident a "test for Indian diplomacy," urging the government to ensure the dignified treatment of Indian nationals abroad.

This marks the second instance of mass deportation, following a similar flight on February 5, which also led to outrage over allegations of inhumane treatment. Amid mounting concerns, the Indian government has reportedly raised the issue with Washington, seeking clarity on the handling of deportees and advocating for humane repatriation processes.
