Family Joins Protest, Alleges Police Misconduct in Kolkata Doctor's Death

In a shocking turn of events, the family of a postgraduate trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered in Kolkata on August 9 has joined the ongoing protests at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim's parents and aunt have leveled serious accusations against the Kolkata Police, claiming attempts to suppress the case and offering bribes.

The victim's aunt made startling allegations during the protest, stating that police officers tried to offer money to the family while the doctor's body was still present in their home. She questioned the humanity of such actions and criticized the police's handling of the situation.

According to the family, they were initially prevented from viewing the body and were made to wait at the police station during the post-mortem examination. The father of the deceased doctor claimed that a senior police official attempted to bribe them when the body was finally handed over, an offer they promptly rejected.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, leading to the second edition of the "Reclaim the Night" campaign across West Bengal. Thousands of women participated in midnight marches, demanding justice for the slain doctor. The movement, largely driven by social media, saw protesters holding national flags and eschewing political party symbols, emphasizing the non-partisan nature of their call for justice.

In response to the growing pressure, the Calcutta High Court ordered the case to be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in mid-August. The court also directed the CBI to take over the probe into alleged financial irregularities at the hospital from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team.

As the investigation unfolds, the CBI has made significant progress, arresting a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy for his alleged involvement in the crime. Additionally, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, was taken into custody in connection with the financial misconduct allegations.

The case continues to draw attention to issues of women's safety and police accountability in West Bengal, with protesters and the victim's family demanding swift and transparent justice.
