China's appointment of Dong Jun as Defence Minister follows the dismissal of Li Shangfu. Amidst official disappearances including Li and Qin, Dong's ascent, President Xi Jinping's power stance, and revived US-China military communications mark recent diplomatic shifts amidst rising tensions.
In
a significant move, China's National People's Congress appointed Dong
Jun as the new Defence Minister, replacing Li Shangfu, who was dismissed
earlier without clarity. Dong, a trusted confidante of President Xi Jinping,
ascended to this high-ranking role following his promotion to general in 2021.
Formerly
commanding the Chinese Navy, Dong's allegiance to the Communist Party of China
(CPC) since October last year underscores his strategic experience. His
jurisdiction spanned critical fleets, including the Eastern Sea Fleet, crucial
in potential conflicts with Japan, and the Southern Command Centre, overseeing
the South China Sea.
President
Xi, vested with clearing top defense appointments, orchestrated Dong's
elevation against the backdrop of recent US-China talks, rekindling contacts
between their defense officials post a summit between Xi and President Biden.
Meanwhile,
the mysterious disappearances of Li and Qin, both close to Xi, have fueled
speculations but haven't signaled policy shifts. Notably, Li's absence from
crucial meetings and Qin's vanishing from public view raise questions about
Xi's firm grip amidst rising tensions.
The trend continued with the unexplained disappearances of key figures managing China's nuclear arsenal. General Li Yuchao and Deputy General Liu Guangbin vanished, replaced after months of absence.

Li's
case sparked varied rumors, including reports hinting at investigations and
allegations of potential house arrest. Amid these controversies, Xi's focus on
loyalty and combating corruption intensifies, reinforcing his political
standing.
In
a diplomatic turn, China and the US reestablished military communications, a
notable shift from past protests. The video call between military heads hailed
for its constructive nature, marks progress amidst heightened US-China
tensions.
This development gains significance as China's navy expands, challenging US influence globally. While Pentagon officials emphasize the importance of open dialogue to avert conflicts, caution prevails about the duration needed to forge a functional dialogue.
