In a bold move to bolster data security and prevent misuse by threat actors, Google announced that it would be deleting accounts that have remained unused for an extended period. The account purge is set to begin on December 31 this year. If you last logged into your Google account in the last two years, your account might be at risk. Google's Vice President for Product Management, Ruth Kricheli, highlighted that dormant accounts could be compromised, making the deletion crucial for protecting user data.

account deletion
Google is set to delete inactive accounts from December 31.

Google will take the necessary steps to notify users with inactive accounts before proceeding with deletion. They repeatedly send emails to the account and the recovery email address to ensure users are well-informed. Deleting will impact various services, including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Photos, Meet, and Calendar.

However, Google gives users a simple solution to retain their rarely-used accounts and prevent them from being flagged inactive. All you need to do is log in every two years. Alternatively, engaging in certain activities like sending or reading emails, using Google Drive, Search, YouTube, and signing in on other websites can safeguard your account.

Ensure data security and retain your account by logging in every two years or engaging in certain activities.

Accounts with active YouTube engagement, such as comments, channels, videos, or those with monetary balance, will be exempted from deletion. The 'Google Takeout' service lets you download all your associated data if you no longer need your Google account. For added convenience, Google's Inactive Account Manager can remind you if your account has been dormant for a specific period.

Protect your Google account today and keep it active to ensure your data remains secure and accessible. The countdown to December 31 has begun - act now!
