Cyclone Mocha Turns Bay of Bengal into a Cauldron of Chaos
Cyclone Mocha, a powerful tropical storm brewing in the
Bay of Bengal, has rapidly transformed into a highly dangerous weather system,
the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Friday morning. This
severe cyclonic storm, named after Yemen's historic port city Mokha, is
expected to further intensify and pose a significant threat to coastal regions.
As the cyclone gathers strength, it has prompted
authorities to take precautionary measures, affecting workers in key areas of
West Bengal. Moreover, heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for various
northeastern states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Path Revealed: Coastal Areas on High Alert
According to the IMD, Cyclone Mocha has been moving
northwards at a speed of 09 kmph over the past six hours and has now developed
into a very severe cyclonic storm.
At 5:30 am on May 12, the cyclone was positioned in the central and southeast regions of the Bay of Bengal, around 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair, roughly 930 km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar), and approximately 1010 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar (Bangladesh).
On a Collision
Course: Cyclone Mocha Set to Strike East-Central Bay of Bengal
The weather department forecasts its trajectory to
continue towards the north-northeast, gaining further intensity over the
east-central Bay of Bengal. The cyclone is expected to reach the coastal areas
between Cox's Bazar and Kyaukpyu, near Sittwe, around midday on May 14 as a
highly intense cyclonic storm, with maximum sustained winds ranging from 150 to
160 kmph and gusts reaching up to 175 kmph.

In response to the increasing strength of Cyclone Mocha,
the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has quickly dispatched eight teams
and 200 rescuers to the town of Digha in West Bengal. The cyclone is expected
to transform into a severe storm by May 12 and a very severe cyclonic storm by
May 14, as per predictions.

Storm: Andaman and Nicobar Brace for Drenching Rainfall from Cyclone Mocha
Due to the movement of Cyclone Mocha over the central Bay
of Bengal, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for
heavy rainfall in various northeastern states and the Andaman and Nicobar
Islands. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands will likely experience heavy to hefty
rainfall on May 12, 13, and 14.
Tripura and Mizoram can expect rainfall in most areas on
May 13 and 14, with isolated areas receiving heavy rainfall. Similarly,
Nagaland, Manipur, and south Assam are expected to witness rainfall on May 14,
with heavy downpours in specific regions.
Double Crisis
Looms: Cyclone Mocha Threatens Myanmar Amid Ongoing Civil War
In Myanmar, preparations are underway as Cyclone Mocha
approaches the region. Over 10,000 individuals have already sought shelter,
anticipating the arrival of the cyclone.
The landfall coincides with an ongoing civil war in
Myanmar, posing additional risks to a population already burdened by nearly 2
million internally displaced persons and 1 million refugees.
The region to the south of the Bangladesh border, where the cyclone is projected to make landfall, has historically experienced conflict and hosts large camps for displaced individuals.
Weathering the
Tempest: North 24 Parganas Ramps Up Preparedness for Cyclone Mocha
The North 24 Parganas district administration has taken
necessary measures in the Sundarban area in response to the storm warning. Control
rooms have been established in each block, including Sandeshkhali-1,
Sandeshkhali -2, Hingalganj, and Minakhan, to ensure round-the-clock
coordination and assistance.
In anticipation of the cyclone's impact, leave for
employees in the irrigation and power departments has been canceled for the
next week. Schools in the area are being prepared to serve as shelters, and
officials are closely monitoring the condition of weak dams and embankments.
Additionally, 56 cyclone shelters have been activated along
the district coast, and health workers have been instructed to remain vigilant.
The Fury of
Cyclone Mocha: Vigilance and Safety Measures Crucial for Survival
Cyclone Mocha, now classified as a very severe cyclonic
storm, poses a significant threat to coastal areas in the Bay of Bengal region.
As it continues to gain strength, authorities have taken necessary precautions,
deploying rescue teams and canceling leaves for key workers in West Bengal.
Heavy rainfall alerts have been issued for various northeastern
states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Preparations are also underway in
Myanmar, where the cyclone is expected to make landfall, raising concerns due
to ongoing civil war and the presence of large populations in vulnerable areas.
With the potential for high winds and heavy rainfall,
residents and authorities in the affected regions must remain vigilant and take
appropriate safety measures.
