Cyclone Mocha, a powerful tropical storm brewing in the Bay of Bengal, has rapidly transformed into a highly dangerous weather system, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Friday morning. This severe cyclonic storm, named after Yemen's historic port city Mokha, is expected to further intensify and pose a significant threat to coastal regions.

 

As the cyclone gathers strength, it has prompted authorities to take precautionary measures, affecting workers in key areas of West Bengal. Moreover, heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for various northeastern states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

 

Cyclone Mocha's Path Revealed: Coastal Areas on High Alert

According to the IMD, Cyclone Mocha has been moving northwards at a speed of 09 kmph over the past six hours and has now developed into a very severe cyclonic storm.

At 5:30 am on May 12, the cyclone was positioned in the central and southeast regions of the Bay of Bengal, around 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair, roughly 930 km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar), and approximately 1010 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar (Bangladesh).

On a Collision Course: Cyclone Mocha Set to Strike East-Central Bay of Bengal

The weather department forecasts its trajectory to continue towards the north-northeast, gaining further intensity over the east-central Bay of Bengal. The cyclone is expected to reach the coastal areas between Cox's Bazar and Kyaukpyu, near Sittwe, around midday on May 14 as a highly intense cyclonic storm, with maximum sustained winds ranging from 150 to 160 kmph and gusts reaching up to 175 kmph.

 

NDRF Warriors Deployed: Battling the Wrath of Cyclone Mocha in West Bengal

In response to the increasing strength of Cyclone Mocha, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has quickly dispatched eight teams and 200 rescuers to the town of Digha in West Bengal. The cyclone is expected to transform into a severe storm by May 12 and a very severe cyclonic storm by May 14, as per predictions.

 

Gurminder Singh, Commandant of the 2nd Battalion, NDRF, stated that 200 rescuers have been dispatched to the affected areas, with an additional 100 rescuers on standby, ready to assist in rescue and relief operations.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands will likely experience heavy to hefty rainfall on May 12, 13, and 14.

 

Tripura and Mizoram can expect rainfall in most areas on May 13 and 14, with isolated areas receiving heavy rainfall. Similarly, Nagaland, Manipur, and south Assam are expected to witness rainfall on May 14, with heavy downpours in specific regions.

 

Double Crisis Looms: Cyclone Mocha Threatens Myanmar Amid Ongoing Civil War

In Myanmar, preparations are underway as Cyclone Mocha approaches the region. Over 10,000 individuals have already sought shelter, anticipating the arrival of the cyclone.

 

The landfall coincides with an ongoing civil war in Myanmar, posing additional risks to a population already burdened by nearly 2 million internally displaced persons and 1 million refugees.

 

The region to the south of the Bangladesh border, where the cyclone is projected to make landfall, has historically experienced conflict and hosts large camps for displaced individuals.

Additionally, 56 cyclone shelters have been activated along the district coast, and health workers have been instructed to remain vigilant.
