In style in what could be described as the climax of the T20 World Cup held in Barbados recently, India came from the rear to snatch the cup after seventeen years of waiting to clinch its second T20 World Cup championship by dispatching South Africa on Saturday. This win not only cheered millions of cricket lovers but also broke India’s eleven-year ICC championship less run.
This match can be described as one that featured quality display by most of the players in the two teams especially those that are considered to be influential. Virat Kohli set the tone for the team as he scored 76 runs that saw India post a decent total. The last few overs turned out to be nail-biting where Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh stepped up to the occasion and helped India win.
The victory proved to be memorable for the head coach Rahul Dravid, who started and ended his coaching career with the team triumphantly. This was the first World Cup that Dravid could savor victory, either as a cricketer or as the chief mentor of the Indian cricket team. A 50-year-old was over the moon with the victory, with Robin Uthappa describing his celebration as being like that of a ‘5-year-old kid.
The loss elicited very passionate feelings within and out of the cricket family. Uthappa, an Indian cricketer during the period of the 2007 T20 World Cup success was moved while discussing the feat with Ashwin on his YouTube channel. But while emphasising on the essence of the win, the cricketer was quoted as saying, ‘Every player who has played for India and has represented the country understands the kind of s*** we undergo’.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also celebrated the event and extended warm messages of felicitations to the best players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and others and commended Rahul Dravid for his hard work.
