Narendra Modi:-
Congressman Ro Khanna expressed confidence that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will extend an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address a joint Meeting of the United States Congress. Khanna, a Democrat from California and co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, along with Republican co-chair Michael Waltz from Florida, met with McCarthy to discuss the invitation.
Following the meeting, Khanna stated that based on their constructive discussion, he is very confident that the Speaker will invite PM Modi to address a joint session of Congress.
McCarthy reportedly views India as a critical ally and recognizes the significance of the India-US relationship in the 21st century.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited by President Joe Biden for a state visit to Washington DC on June 22. During the visit, Biden will host bilateral talks and a state dinner, making Modi only the third Indian leader to receive this honor, following President S. Radhakrishnan in 1963 and PM Manmohan Singh in 2009.
In their letter to Speaker McCarthy, Khanna, and Waltz highlighted the 75th anniversary of Indian independence and the foundation of the India-US partnership based on a shared commitment to democracy and a rules-based international system.
They emphasized the mutual interests of the United States and India in promoting global security, stability, and economic prosperity, as well as the deep bond forged between the two countries.
The letter also referenced recent meetings between Modi and Biden, which reaffirmed their dedication to a resilient international order. Khanna and Waltz commended the role of the Quad in discussing shared security interests and recognized India's emergence as a leading global power.
The co-chairs of the India caucus emphasized the strong people-to-people ties between the United States and India, exemplified by the four million-strong Indian American diaspora and educational exchanges.
They believed that a joint address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Congress would provide an invaluable opportunity for constructive dialogue and further strengthen the friendship between the two nations.
Under the leadership of Khanna and Waltz, the India caucus has demonstrated increased energy and engagement in the bilateral relationship. They recently hosted a summit to discuss various aspects of the India-US relationship and have been actively engaging with Indian and diaspora interlocutors. The caucus leaders also expressed their intention to visit India at some point this year.
