As a result of the efforts of the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India, the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) has recognised the NMC of India for a full decade. This has far-reaching consequences for Indian medical graduates because it opens doors to postgraduate study and professional practise in nations where WFME registration is a prerequisite, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The World Federation of Medical Educators (WFME) has granted accreditation to all 706 of India's existing medical colleges, and will do the same for any medical colleges that are founded in the next decade.
Because of its high quality education system, India is now in a prime position to recruit students from all over the world.
This success is destined to improve the quality and standards of medical education in India, bringing it in line with global best practises while also allowing worldwide mobility for Indian medical professionals. An improved international position and reputation for Indian medical schools and healthcare workers is projected to promote scholarly partnerships and new approaches to medical education.
The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is an international group with the stated mission of "advancing health through education." Its stated goal is to improve healthcare for all people by bolstering medical education that adheres to the highest scientific and ethical standards.
This recognition also has implications for Indian medical graduates aiming to practice in the United States. The Education Commission on Foreign Medical Education (ECFMG) in the U.S. requires certification for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) planning to take the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs) and apply for medical residencies. Starting in 2024, IMGs must be students or graduates of medical schools accredited by an agency recognized by WFME.
This achievement represents a substantial leap forward in the globalization of Indian medical education, enhancing opportunities for Indian medical graduates to practice abroad while elevating healthcare education standards in the country.
