Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense pride as Archbishop George Jacob Koovakad from Kerala was elevated to Cardinal by Pope Francis at St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. The ceremony, held on Saturday, marked a significant moment for India as Koovakad became a part of the Holy Roman Catholic Church's highest echelons.
Archbishop Koovakad, 68, is a prominent figure from the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Changanacherry. Since 2020, he has played a critical role in coordinating the Pope's international travels, reflecting his stature within the global Catholic Church. Pope Francis’ consistory not only created 21 new cardinals, including Koovakad, but also introduced a significant number of voting-age cardinals, further shaping the church’s future leadership.
Prime Minister Modi took to social media, calling the occasion "a matter of great joy and pride for India." He lauded Koovakad’s lifelong dedication to serving humanity and extended his best wishes for his future endeavors. The elevation also highlights the diversity and global influence of the Syro-Malabar Church, a major Catholic rite rooted in Kerala.
An official Indian delegation led by Union Minister George Kurian attended the event in Vatican City, joined by leaders across political lines, including Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh and BJP representatives Anil Antony and Tom Vadakkan. Their presence emphasized the significance of this milestone in fostering interfaith and international connections.
