In a historic move, by Britain, Labour Party triumphs in the general election after 14 years of Conservative domination. The current leader of the Labour party, Keir Starmer is expected to be the next British Prime Minister as his party won 409 out of 650 seats in the Parliament, a clear majority compared to the 326 needed.

In a victory speech at a rally in London, Starmer said: “Change begins now. ” He described the mandate received as significant and highlighted the fact that the party has a role to play in driving change. For national renewal and for politics for the ‘good,’ he called.

The Conservative Party who was in power before the election, headed by Rishi Sunak also lost badly getting only 117 seats. Though Sunak had retained his parliamentary seat, he accepted defeat and attributed the loss as a ‘humbling result’ from the British people.

The Conservative party has also suffered loses in several of its prominent figures such as the Defence Secretary Grant Shapps and the Commons leader Penny Mordaunt among others. The Liberal Democrats bagged 70 seats and the Scottish National Party managed to get 8. Amongst the new entrants, Brexit advocate Nigel Farage was finally able to clinch a seat in the parliament on the eighth attempt with his newly founded Reform UK party managing to win 4 seats.

Labour’s victory is attributed to the people of Britain being disillusioned with the Conservative government in terms of their economic policies as well as the internal squabbles within the Conservative party. The election results indicate a rather new era in British politics, and Starmer has really big shoes to fill as the country faces some major tests.
