In a tweet, Banerjee expressed her anguish over the distress signals and SOS messages received from Manipur. She emphasized her commitment to standing by the people and announced that the government of West Bengal will make every effort to evacuate those stranded, working in coordination with the Manipur government. The chief secretary has been directed to oversee the entire evacuation process and provide assistance to people in distress.
Banerjee has also shared helpline numbers for those seeking assistance in Manipur. Unfortunately, the exact number of people from West Bengal who are stranded in Manipur is not currently available. The death toll due to the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur has risen to 54, according to officials. Unofficial sources, however, suggest that the actual number of casualties could be higher, with scores of people dead and over 150 injured.
Meanwhile, in Imphal Valley, life is slowly returning to a wary normalcy. Shops and markets have reopened, and cars have started plying the roads. The violence initially erupted in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district during the 'Tribal Solidarity March' organized by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3. The march aimed to protest the demand of the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
During the march in Torbung, an armed mob reportedly attacked members of the Meitei community, leading to retaliatory attacks in the valley districts and escalating the violence throughout the state. The police have refrained from confirming the unofficial reports of numerous casualties, but multiple sources indicate that the clashes between communities have resulted in several scores of deaths and around a hundred injuries. The Meiteis, who make up approximately 53 percent of the population, reside predominantly in the Imphal Valley, while the tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, account for around 40 percent and live primarily in the surrounding hill districts.
The situation remains tense, and the governments of West Bengal and Manipur are working together to ensure the safe evacuation of stranded individuals and restore peace.
