A nationwide doctors' strike has paralyzed hospital services across India, prompted by the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. The IMA has called for PM Modi's intervention, demanding a central law to protect healthcare workers. The government plans to form a committee to address safety concerns.
A 24-hour nationwide strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has severely disrupted hospital services across India. The strike, triggered by the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9, saw doctors from multiple states participating in protests and candle marches.
Outpatient departments (OPDs) and elective surgeries in both private and public hospitals were shut down, with only emergency services remaining operational. The strike also condemned the vandalism at the hospital on August 14.
In response to the crisis, the IMA has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene, presenting five key demands. These include enacting a central law to protect healthcare workers and declaring hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security measures.
The Union health ministry has announced plans to form a committee, including state representatives, to suggest safety measures for healthcare workers. However, the IMA has expressed skepticism about this approach, citing lack of progress from similar past initiatives.
In Kolkata, the epicenter of the protests, police have restricted public gatherings around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days. The CBI is actively investigating the case, questioning Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the college, for the second consecutive day.

The West Bengal government has responded by introducing the "Rattirer Shaathi" programme, a set of new measures aimed at ensuring the safety of women working night shifts in hospitals.
As the strike continues to impact healthcare services nationwide, there are growing concerns about its effect on patient care, particularly in light of rising dengue and malaria cases. The medical community awaits concrete action from the government to address their safety concerns and prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
