On 21st January 2023, Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport & Highways, shared a picture of the Vadodara-Virar highway on his Twitter account and wrote, “limiting the distance for prosperous India.” Nitin Gadkari’s post disclosed the idea of the new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway which is under construction. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project is a marvel in itself since it will cut down the travel time between the two metro cities by 13 hours.   1. Currently, the shortest Highway route between the two cities is via NH-48 which takes approximately 25 hours. With the successful construction of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, this time would be reduced to a mere 12-hour journey.
  2. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is being built on a whopping budget of 1,03,000 crore rupees.
  3. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway would connect some important cities such as Gurugram, Indore, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota and Vadodara. The states that the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway would be passing through are MP, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Haryana.
  4. The time of road travel between Gurugram and Jaipur was 4-5 hours earlier and it would be reduced to 2 hours with the construction of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
  5. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be the largest Indian expressway.
When Will The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway Be Operational? The ongoing Delhi-Mumbai Expressway construction had started in 2018. In 2022, Nitin Gadkari had announced that the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway would be functional by December. However, according to current estimates, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is expected to be functional by the end of the fiscal year 2023- 24 according to Nitin Gadkari. This means the project is expected to conclude in the initial months of the year 2024.
