A clash erupted between locals and the police in Katihar on Wednesday. The fight, which was due to the insufficient power supply by the electricity department, caused the death of a person.
The Superintendent of Police of Katihar reported, "People pelted stones and vandalised the office of the Electricity Department. One person has died and two are injured in this incident. DM and SP are present on the spot."The police official further stated that the mob launched an "attack" on the police during the incident.
On Wednesday afternoon, a huge crowd gathered in the Barsoi subdivision, to lay siege to the electricity office in protest against the prolonged power supply cuts. In order to regain control of the situation, the police had to resort to opening fire.
As a result, several individuals were injured and have been taken to the district hospital for treatment. The police authorities later assured that they have now successfully brought the situation under control.
Vijay Sinha, the Leader of the Opposition, strongly criticised the ruling party which is under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Sinha stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will stage a protest against the government's handling of the issue at hand.
In response to the distressing incident, Sinha expressed his sorrow during his interaction with the reporters, where he said, “The incident is very painful. I will talk to the administration. If the government will try to muffle the voice of the people who want to demonstrate against it, we will bid it farewell."
Samrat Choudhary, Bihar BJP chief, also condemned the Nitish Kumar government's actions in response to the incident. He expressed his concerns stating, "It's unfortunate that the police, under the Nitish Kumar government, are using force against citizens peacefully protesting for their right to electricity."
He further added, "After the jobs, the government is now resorting to shooting those who simply demand electricity in Bihar." Choudhary also called for a judicial inquiry to thoroughly investigate the incident.
