In various Indian states, such as Karnataka, Delhi, and Bihar, dengue is surging, with Tamil Nadu reporting eight fatalities and 6,000 viral infection cases in 2023. Dengue-related deaths are being reported across the country, severely affecting both the elderly and children. To safeguard against dengue, it's crucial to take necessary precautions, particularly for children attending school.

Preventing Dengue in Children

Symptom Awareness: The first step in protecting children from dengue is being aware of the symptoms. Early signs include high fever, vomiting, eye pain, weakness, and red skin rashes. If you notice these symptoms in your child, seek immediate medical attention.

Mosquito Repellent: Before sending your children to school, apply mosquito repellent cream. Ensure that they carry it in their bags. Older children can apply the cream themselves. Consider using roll-on or spray repellents for their convenience.

Indoor Activities: Children often play in grassy areas, but it's important to educate them about safe places in school. Advise them to avoid waterlogged spots and grassy areas, which are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Dietary Changes: Enhance children's immunity by incorporating immune-boosting foods into their diets. Yogurt, turmeric, ginger, garlic, spinach, almonds, and citrus fruits can strengthen their immune systems.

Protective Clothing: Instead of dressing children in short sleeves, send them to school in full-sleeved attire. They can wear stockings or pants under skirts and apply mosquito repellent on exposed areas like the neck, arms, and legs.

As dengue cases continue to rise, taking proactive measures to safeguard children from this debilitating disease is of paramount importance. By recognizing symptoms, using mosquito repellents, promoting safe outdoor activities, maintaining a balanced diet, and ensuring appropriate clothing, parents can help shield their children from the dengue menace in high-risk areas across India.
