Former Indian National Congress President Rahul Gandhi vacated his official residence in Tughlaq Lane, Delhi, on Friday. Following his disqualification as a Member of Parliament due to his conviction in a defamation case, Gandhi was asked to vacate the premises by April 22, 2023. He had earlier shifted his office and some personal belongings to his mother Sonia Gandhi's official residence on April 14, 2023.
As Rahul Gandhi vacated his residence, the Congress and its leaders launched a social media campaign with the hashtag #MeraGharAapkaGhar to extend support to their former party president. The campaign emphasized that Rahul Gandhi is like a family to the people of India and that their homes are open to him. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra praised her brother's courage, saying he would "continue his fight."
Several Congress leaders lauded Rahul Gandhi's decision to vacate the premises, calling it an "exemplary gesture." Party MP Shashi Tharoor tweeted that the move showed Gandhi's respect for the rules, while senior Congress leader KC Venugopal said that Rahul Gandhi will always have a place in the hearts and homes of the party's supporters.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said that while Gandhi had vacated his official residence, his "goal and destination are much higher than a house." She emphasized that "home is a feeling" of love and peace and that crores of people open their hearts and homes to Gandhi.
Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Salman Anees Soz extended an invitation to Rahul Gandhi to visit his home in Kashmir, saying that millions of Kashmiris would welcome him. Soz praised Gandhi for being on the side of truth and justice and called him a "satyagrahi of truth."
Rahul Gandhi had lived in the Tughlaq Lane bungalow for nearly two decades. However, a Surat court convicted him of defamation on March 23 and gave him a two-year sentence, leading to his disqualification as an MP. Gandhi had challenged the magisterial court order in the sessions court in Surat, which rejected his appeal to set aside the conviction. The Congress has said it will challenge the sessions court order in the Gujarat High Court next week.
In conclusion, Rahul Gandhi vacating his official residence in Tughlaq Lane has led to a social media campaign by the Congress and its leaders to extend support to their former party president. The campaign highlights that Gandhi is like family to the people of India and that their homes are open to him. Congress leaders have praised Gandhi's decision to vacate the premises and emphasized that he will always have a place in the hearts and homes of the party's supporters.
