The Mumbai local train system, which is
considered crucial for the city's transportation, is on the verge of being
replaced with an advanced solution.
According to a senior official from the Mumbai
Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), the Railway Board has given its approval to
acquire 238 Vande Bharat Metro trains to enhance the suburban railway network.
This decision signifies a significant upgrade for Mumbai's local train
infrastructure.
According to a representative from MRVC, the
trains will be produced in line with the Make in India principles set by the
Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. The technology partner
responsible for manufacturing will adhere to these guidelines. MRVC will handle
the procurement process and will also be responsible for the maintenance of the
trains for a duration of 35 years.
The authorities have announced that the
upcoming train coaches will be produced as part of the Mumbai Urban Transport
Project-III (MUTP-III) and 3A (MUTP-3A) initiatives. These projects, led by the
Railway Ministry and the Maharashtra government, aim to enhance the capacity of
the train system. MUTP-III has a total value of ₹10,947 crore, while MUTP-3A is
valued at ₹33,690 crore.
The local trains in the financial capital serve
as a crucial transportation network, with hundreds of thousands of passengers
relying on them for their daily travel needs.
As reported by the Indian Express, the Western
Railways (WR) and Central Railways (CR) manage two suburban railway corridors
that cover a combined distance of 319 kilometers. These corridors provide a
total of 3,129 train services, including those operated by air-conditioned (AC)
local trains.
As per the railway department representative,
the implementation of Vande Metro trains aims to enhance the commuting
experience by providing a secure and pleasant journey for passengers.
The official highlighted that Vande Bharat
Metro, a scaled-down version of India's original self-developed high-speed
train called Vande Bharat Express, was recently introduced in the Union Budget
for the fiscal year 2023-24. These advanced trains will utilize modern
technology and will primarily be used for covering relatively shorter
distances, connecting cities that are approximately 100 kilometers apart.
