The Supreme Court slammed the Uttarakhand licensing authority for delayed action against Patanjali, suspending 14 licenses only after the court's intervention, questioning its "lightning" move after years of inaction.
New Delhi, April 30, 2024: The Supreme Court today rebuked the Uttarakhand SLA for its tardy process in taking action against Patanjali Ayurved and co-founder Baba Ramdev for multiple violations of the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act. The two Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah in the bench criticized the SLA for taking action like "lightning" to cancel 14 manufacturing licenses of Patanjali Group companies only when the court intervened.
The Supreme Court said it was not happy the SLA suspended the Ayurvedic product licenses of Divya Pharmacy and Patanjali Ayurved on April 15, just after the court sought a reply from the authority regarding its inaction despite the repeated complaints from the AYUSH Ministry on April 10.
"This is something that you should have done as a duty. So if you want lightning to move, you can. Otherwise, you can not," Justice Kohli questioned the counsel for SLA.
The court observed that the SLA learned of the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act only after the court's direction. "Why did you spend five years in limbo?" Justice Kohli asked, questioning the authority's self-certification as being "vigilant".

The court granted the SLA 10 days only to file the fresh affidavits, expressing its dissatisfaction with the current affidavits dating back to the initial complaints against Patanjali products which were made six years ago. This case has been set for hearing on May 14.
