The Background of The Karnataka Hijab Row Case: What Happened Before The Supreme Court Was Approached?The Karnataka Hijab row matter, now before the Supreme Court, began in December 2022 when 6 Muslim girls from the Udupi Women’s PU College protested against not being allowed to attend regular classes wearing their traditional religious attire, the Hijab. Hindu students countered them by wearing saffron shawls and asking the authorities to allow Hindu religious clothing as well.Slowly, protests over the Karnataka Hijab row began in the public colleges of Koppa and Chikmagalur and in Pompei College of Mangalore. The Karnataka Education Department sent a circular ordering the colleges to formulate a uniform set of rules regarding the dress code to be followed in schools before the intervention of the High Court and Supreme Court. Supreme Court’s New DecisionIn the Supreme Court’s new decision, it rejected urgent listing of the Karnataka Hijab row matter although an academic year of the students are at stake.
