The Supreme Court will continue its suo motu hearing today regarding the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is now overseeing the case, is expected to submit a confidential status report on the investigation. The case has ignited widespread protests by junior doctors, who are demanding improved safety measures in hospitals.

The CBI investigation also includes probing former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and others for financial irregularities within the hospital. Indira Jaising will represent the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF) at the hearing, as junior doctors refuse to resume work until their demands are met by the state government.

In a previous hearing on September 9, the Supreme Court directed the doctors to resume duties but reassured them that the state would not take adverse action. However, the doctors have continued their protests, demanding safety guarantees and the implementation of promises made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, including the removal of key officials from their posts.
