Survivors of Manipur Assault Seek Supreme Court's Intervention as CBI Takes Over Investigation

The survivors of the harrowing incident where women were paraded naked and sexually assaulted in Manipur have taken a significant step towards seeking justice and protection of their identity. The MHA informed the apex court last week that the investigation into the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has formally lodged an FIR. The home ministry further urged the top court to transfer the trial outside Manipur to ensure a time-bound conclusion.

On June 19 a video of the horrific incident surfaced online and quickly went viral. Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district subsequently reported a case of kidnapping, gangrape, and murder, leading to the arrest of seven individuals.

As soon as the video surfaced on July 20, the Supreme Court took notice, expressing grave concern and condemning the use of women as weapons of violence in a constitutional society. The Chief Justice issued an order requiring the Centre and the Manipur government to adopt immediate corrective, rehabilitative, and preventative measures and to keep the court informed of their progress.
