Supreme Court's Intervention as CBI

The survivors of the harrowing incident where women were paraded naked and sexually assaulted in Manipur have taken a significant step towards seeking justice and protection of their identity. They have approached the Supreme Court with a fresh petition, focusing on the viral video of their ordeal, and filed a separate application related to the FIR concerning the May 4 sexual assault incident.

The case is set to be heard by a bench led by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, who will peruse the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reply on July 31. The MHA informed the apex court last week that the investigation into the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has formally lodged an FIR. The home ministry further urged the top court to transfer the trial outside Manipur to ensure a time-bound conclusion.

On June 19 a video of the horrific incident surfaced online and quickly went viral. Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district subsequently reported a case of kidnapping, gangrape, and murder, leading to the arrest of seven individuals.

As soon as the video surfaced on July 20, the Supreme Court took notice, expressing grave concern and condemning the use of women as weapons of violence in a constitutional society. The Chief Justice issued an order requiring the Centre and the Manipur government to adopt immediate corrective, rehabilitative, and preventative measures and to keep the court informed of their progress.

The involvement of the Supreme Court and the transfer of the case to the CBI are important steps towards guaranteeing a thorough and timely investigation, which is crucial given the survivors' desire for justice and the preservation of their identities. The survivors' demands for privacy and justice have remained at the forefront of this delicate and important topic, and the nation waits for further developments.
