Despite a widespread belief that he is responsible for the deaths of over half a million Syrians and the relocation of millions more, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was recently accorded a hero's welcome upon his return to the Arab League. Concern has been voiced by Western nations that this move could derail efforts to end the long-running civil war in Syria.

The repairment of Assad's relations with Arab states may be directly attributed to the support he has received from Iran and Russia, which has allowed him to consolidate his position.

Some Arab countries are supporting Assad in the hopes of reducing Iran's influence in Syria, while others are aiming to eliminate the revenue stream provided by the highly addictive narcotic, Captagon. Concerns remain about the regime's commitment to resolving this issue, despite reports that Syria has pledged to cease Captagon manufacture and trafficking.

Meanwhile, the initial hope that the Assad administration would fall has been replaced by a stronger desire for Syrian refugees to return home from Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey.

Migrants have been forcibly deported as a result of the ongoing economic upheaval in several nations because locals regard them as a danger to their ability to make a life.

While denouncing Western hegemony and stressing the importance of safeguarding Arab identity at the most recent meeting of the Arab League, Assad gave the impression of being successful. Russia is relieved that he has returned to the Arab fold, which they see as a diplomatic victory and a chance to lighten their load in stabilizing Syria.

Iran has similar ambitions, in that it intends to cut back on the money it gives to the Assad government.

Kurdish groups that have fought against Assad are worried that if he is rehabilitated, the United States will pull its remaining troops out of Syria, leaving them defenseless once more.

The fact that Assad was reinstated into the Arab League without making any significant commitments, especially concerning the absorption of refugees, highlights the difficulties and obstacles linked with the Syrian situation.

Despite their persistent pessimism, western countries are likely to keep sanctions against the regime in place while they hunt for a long-term solution to the crisis.
