Team Shiv Sena Takes A Dig At Finance Minister As Tomato Prices Witness Surge

Team Shiv Sena Finance Minister As Tomato

In a witty response to the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi took a dig at Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Chaturvedi questioned whether the country's finance minister actually consumes tomatoes and challenged her to address the rising prices.

This remark by the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader is a clear reference to Sitharaman's statement on onion prices during the winter session of Parliament in 2019. When faced with opposition criticism about the soaring cost of onions, Sitharaman humorously mentioned that her family has little to do with the vegetable bulb and that she doesn't consume much of it.

The surge in tomato prices is a cause for concern as they have skyrocketed from ₹10-20 per kg to ₹80-100 per kg across markets in the country. This drastic increase is attributed to a decrease in supply caused by heat waves and heavy rainfall in tomato-growing regions.

Ajay Kedia, a commodity market expert and head of Kedia Advisory in Mumbai, explained that the reduction in tomato cultivation this year is a result of farmers switching to growing beans due to a surge in bean prices last year. Insufficient rainfall during the monsoon season has resulted in harm to crops and dehydration, resulting in a restricted availability of vegetables, specifically tomatoes.

The impact of this tomato shortage is evident in the market prices. For instance, in the Kanpur market in Uttar Pradesh, tomatoes that were priced at ₹40-50 per kg a week ago are now being sold at ₹100 per kg. Similarly, in Delhi, tomatoes are being sold at ₹80 per kg.

With this ongoing price hike, Chaturvedi's witty question serves as a reminder for the finance minister to address the concerns of the common people grappling with the burden of rising food prices.
