Have you heard of the prohibited flying zone over the
Jagannath Puri Temple? If not, gear up to discover the historic and mysterious
world of the Puri Jagannath Temple. Puri lies near the seacoast of the Bay of
Bengal in Odisha. It's known to the world for the highly popular and admired
Puri Jagannath Temple and the magnificent Rath Yatra. This is also the
particular reason behind Puri being known as Jagannath Puri. The megacity is 60
kilometers from the capital of the state, Bhubaneswar.
Rath
Yatra and The Puri Jagannath Temple
The Puri Jagannath temple is one among the
4 Dhams in India. The periodic Rath
Yatra, or chariot jubilee’s massive procession begins from the Puri Jagannath temple. The idol worshiped in the temple is made of wood and replaced every 12 or 19 times by a replica, in contrast to the way other Hindu idols are made with metal or stone.
History
of the Puri Jagannath Temple
The temple was restructured by the Ganga dynasty king
Anantavarman Chodaganga in the 12th century, as can be inferred from the
Kendupatna copper inscription.
In 1692, Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb ordered the shutdown of the Puri Jagannath temple until he ordered it to reopen. It was opened again for worship only after Aurangzeb, the last Mughal emperor, died in 1707. The Maratha and the British assumed control of the Temple complex in 1751 and 1803 independently.
In 1809 the British East India Company officially returned
the charge of the Temple to the Rajas who would retain control till British
power itself was pulled from India. In 1975, the Archeological Survey of India
crafted a plan to remove the multiple layers of lime on the temple to uncover
the original designs beneath. The conservation plan has lasted for 2 decades
now.
